Macabacus vs INSYNCR: the deck add in and the data link

What each is for, what each costs, what each lacks, and which one you need. Written from Macabacus's own published pages, dated.

The short answer

Macabacus is built around investment banking: models in Excel, linked Office documents, and the formatting conventions that go with deal work. INSYNCR is built around recurring reports bound to live sources. If your work is deal models, Macabacus. If it is the same report every month out of a database or a warehouse, INSYNCR.

What Macabacus is, in one sentence

A Microsoft 365 productivity add in for finance: Excel modelling and formula auditing, keyboard shortcuts, linking Microsoft PowerPoint exhibits and text to Excel cells and charts, quick charts, a brand check and shared libraries.

What it is used for

  • Building and auditing financial models in Excel faster
  • Linking PowerPoint and Word exhibits to the model
  • Chart shortcuts and brand compliance checks
  • Shared team libraries

Who typically runs it: analysts in banking, private equity and corporate finance; the person who owns the model.

What it costs

Basic is $200 a year per license, Professional $360 a year per license, Enterprise on request. 14 day free trial, no credit card.

What it lacks for a recurring report

  • Any source that is not Excel: databases, Salesforce, SharePoint, OData
  • One deck or file per record from one template
  • Rules by value on the slide
  • Viewer seats for people who only refresh

Where Macabacus is better than INSYNCR

  • Excel modelling productivity, auditing and shortcuts, which INSYNCR does not touch
  • Price: $200 to $360 a year is well under an INSYNCR Automator seat
  • Word linking as well as PowerPoint

Which to pick

Keep Macabacus for the model. If the deck built from that model recurs, goes to many clients, or must be refreshed by people who did not build it, bind it with INSYNCR. For a one off pitch from one workbook, Macabacus alone is enough and cheaper.

Fair play

We describe Macabacus from its own website and public documentation, dated above, and say nothing about it we have not read there. If something is out of date or unfair, write to info@insyncr.com and we will fix it.

FAQ

Questions people ask before they try it

Is INSYNCR cheaper than Macabacus?
