think-cell vs INSYNCR: drawing the chart and keeping it right

What each is for, what each costs, what each lacks, and which one you need. Written from think-cell's own published pages, dated.

The short answer

think-cell draws the chart. INSYNCR keeps it right. If the hard part of your week is building waterfalls, Gantts and Mekkos quickly, think-cell is the better tool and INSYNCR does not replace it. If the hard part is the same deck rebuilt every cycle from new figures, INSYNCR binds each chart, table and number to its source and refreshes the lot.

What it lacks for a recurring report

  • Generating one deck or one file per client, company or student from one template
  • Binding the text and the tables around the chart to the same source as the chart
  • Rules that color a value or drop a slide by value
  • Connecting to a database, a CRM or SharePoint rather than an Excel range
  • A Viewer role: someone who only refreshes

Where think-cell is better than INSYNCR

  • Drawing charts. If the question is how to make a waterfall look right, think-cell is the answer and INSYNCR is not
  • Agendas, Gantt and process flows
  • Adoption inside consultancies; your new hires may already know it

Which to pick

If the deck is one off, think-cell. If the same deck goes out every month with new numbers, bind it with INSYNCR and draw the one off charts with think-cell. INSYNCR binds native PowerPoint charts; a think-cell chart keeps its own datasheet, so recurring charts go on native objects.

Fair play

We describe think-cell from its own website and public documentation, dated above, and say nothing about it we have not read there. If something is out of date or unfair, write to info@insyncr.com and we will fix it.
